Pokken Tournament is finally making a comeback, and probably in the greatest way possible; that’s right, the game is officially headed to the Nintendo Switch! Pokken Tournament DX is set to be a port of sorts/the Switch version of the 2016 Wii U release “Pokken Tournament.” While Pokken Tournament on console has always been a port of sorts considering the game originally released in Japanese arcades back in 2016, the Switch version is seemingly shaping up to be the definitive version of the title, enabling players to go head to head via their own personal Nintendo Switch screens.
Based off the reveal trailer for Pokken Tournament DX, which I must say is one of the best Pokemon trailer I’ve ever seen, we can confirm that this iteration of the title will offer a lot more flexibility when it comes to playing offline with friends, which was recently stated above. It seems playing offline multiplayer via one screen either while the Switch is docked or un-docked is definitely confirmed, as well as being able to play on separate screen with both users utilizing their own Switch console. This is much more flexible than when compared to the Wii U release, which forced one player to use the gamepad, and the other to use the TV screen. It will be nice to see how single-screen utilization will work in the DX version of the title, as the “Field Phase” of the game was arguably the main reason behind players needing their own screen via offline multiplayer.
In addition to the new features in the game, several new Pokemon will also be added to the roster of fighters which are; Decidueye, Croagunk, Darkrai, Empoleon, and Scizor. Several of these Pokemon have in which been available for quite sometime in the Arcade version of Pokken Tournament.
Despite not enjoying Pokken Tournament on the Wii U as much as I had initially thought, I am HYPE for Pokken DX and can’t wait to see where the title goes, especially in the more competitive community.
Pokken Tournament DX launches on the Nintendo Switch on September 22nd, 2017.
