During Sony’s Tokyo Game Show Media Briefing, we received information, yet very little detail, regarding Hideo Kojima’s debut title from his studio, “Kojima Productions”. While we learned that the game would contain open world elements, and would give players the option of either playing with others, or playing with solo, we learned very little in regards to when exactly we’d be closing in on a release date for the game. This isn’t surprising at all, considering the game has barely even begun development yet, and from the sounds of it; is aiming to be a more large-scale sort of title.
Regardless of that Kojima was asked about a possible release date during TGS 2016, where he stated the game would be out “before the Olympics”. In addition to this he stated “there is a movie called Akira, and it will be out before the year in which Akira is set”. Oh Kojima, you cryptic, little, fellow.
Taking everything he stated into a bit more context, the Olympics are currently set to take place in 2020, and the movie Akira, is set in 2019. This likely means the Death Stranding may see a release sometime within 2018, however, I personally wouldn’t expect it until VERY late 2018 at the earliest.
I’m not very too concerned about a release date for the title as of now, as we barely know anything about the game to begin with. In the meantime, I’ll be craving for more details, even if this means we won’t see the titles release until 2020.
