Super Smash Bros. is surely on it’s way…eventually to the Nintendo Switch. I never doubted it once of course, what are you talking about? In all seriousness, it’s rather safe to say that Smash is definitely not ending anytime soon. The franchise is a huge cash-grab for Nintendo as a whole, and continues to be with each iteration.
After various rumors regarding a port of Super Smash Bros. Wii U to be announced for the Nintendo Switch, it has ultimately not yet been confirmed, despite the Wii U’s “Mario Kart 8” getting it’s own Deluxe Edition/Nintendo Switch release. This has definitely left many Smash fans worried and concerned about the future of the franchise as Nintendo quickly shifts their focus fully over from the Wii U to the Switch.
However, based on a recent live Facebook interview with Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Amie, it seems fans won’t have to worry anymore as he has pretty much confirmed that Super Smash Bros. would continue on the companies new next-generation platform. He stated the following:
“Smash is obviously one of our best-selling franchises. What we say is that the philosophy that Nintendo has from a development standpoint is that for every platform, we want to have at least one (each) of our classic franchises.”
So rest easy Smash fans, we’ll have another Smash release on the Nintendo Switch….at some point within the systems lifetime, but when? Is the main question. If a Super Smash Bros. Wii U port is in fact in the works for the Nintendo Switch, could this perhaps be what Reggie was referring too? Or will Smash fans be forced to wait another few years for an entirely new Smash Bros release (Smash 5), and be forced to keep their Wii U’s around to get their Smash Bros. fix in the meantime?
All in all, no one really knows; and with even more rumors spiraling around regarding a port of Super Smash Bros. Wii U arriving on the Nintendo Switch this Fall, it seems E3 2017 is really our only beacon of hope for a potential Smash announcement for Switch, if one is in fact set to arrive anytime soon. I guess we’ll just have to wait a few months and see.
