The Last Guardian has seen several delays since it’s first ever reveal back in 2009, about seven or so years ago. Up until last years E3, details on the game were silent, with many believing the title to be a cancelled project, not yet officially told to the public. During E3 2015, we learned that was not the case, as the title was still in-development and was readying to be released on the PlayStation 4.
Flash-forward to 2016, and The Last Guardian finally received it’s official release date. Originally due for October 25th, however, the game has just recently been confirmed to be receiving another delay, which is likely, it’s final delay. The new release date is currently set for December 6th, and was recently announced during a PlayStation Blog update post, which released earlier today. The announcement read the following:
The Last Guardian development team is fast approaching major milestones in production and has made the tough decision to delay the release of The Last Guardian a few weeks. The Last Guardian will launch on December 6, 2016.
Fumito Ueda, gen DESIGN and JAPAN Studio have a wonderful vision for The Last Guardian’s touching, emotional journey of friendship and trust, and we want to deliver the most polished experience possible for our fans who have supported us for so long. A delay is a difficult decision, particularly with this game, but we have encountered more bugs than anticipated while in the final stages of development. To ensure that The Last Guardian delivers on the experience that the game’s creators have envisioned, we need to take the extra time to work on those issues.
A delay to December 6th, isn’t quite as hard-hitting as a delay to 2017 would be, so for that I am grateful, along with the likely many others who have been anticipating this title for quite some time. While still, not much has been revealed regarding the story surrounding the title, it’s likely we will hear a bit more about it at the upcoming Tokyo Game Show, as the game is slated to have some sort of presence there.
