Fans have been waiting for what seems like forever; and while we’ve felt somewhere, deep down in our hearts, that a sequel was inevitable – the official announcement still took many by surprise.
The Last of Us Part II was officially revealed during Sony’s PlayStation Experience 2016 showcase via an announcement trailer. The trailer was fairly intense and very heart wrenching, as it mainly featured Ellie. The trailer kicks off with a shot of the woods right before showcasing the Naughty Dog logo; shortly afterwards we’re shown a hand playing the guitar which is quickly revealed to be Ellie. Shortly following we see the house she currently dwells in as Joel enters; not too mention the house has quite a few dead bodies laying around, and blood seemingly everywhere. When Joel enters Ellie’s room, he asks if she’s alright and if she plans to continue her plan, where she soon swears to kill “every last one of them.”
While it’s a bit unclear if she’s referring to the zombies, or perhaps a group of living humans who could very well be after her; it is quite evident that we’ll be seeing a much darker and more sinister Ellie in Part II of The Last of Us, as it’s been announced that you’ll be playing as Ellie in the upcoming sequel.
The creative director of the title, Neil Druckmann recently followed up on the PlayStation Blog regarding the announcement, and had the following to say;
I can’t tell you how satisfying it is to finally be able to say that Ellie and Joel are back for another intense, harrowing, and emotional adventure. Like many of you, we have a deep love for the world of The Last of Us and its characters, and while a sequel may have seemed like a foregone conclusion, that wasn’t the case. We knew that it needed to be a story worth telling and, perhaps more importantly, a story worthy of Joel and Ellie. After spending years on different ideas (and almost giving up), we finally uncovered a story that felt special—a story that evolved into an epic journey.
It’s still early days for the project—the game’s release is a ways off—but we couldn’t wait any longer to give you a glimpse of what’s to come. We’re going to let the trailer speak for itself, but expect more information about The Last of Us Part II in the coming months.
The Last of Us Part II announcement definitely has Sony fans happy. It seems they are getting everything they have ever wanted, or at least revealed. It will be interesting to see where Naughty Dog takes the games story; many eyes are all on them now.
