Right… I thought during my boredom in college I had seen the darkest and craziest things the internet had to offer. To be honest a lot of the more bizarre things I saw all seemed to be exported from Japan and don’t try to deny, there is a reason why I only stayed playing with yabby casino. However, this might beat out all of those things and has apparently already had a great deal of success not just in Japan but in the US as well. Hatoful Boyfriend is a dating simulation game, something Japan has no shortage of apparently but it is very rare they get ported to the US. I suppose Hakuoki did come out on PS3, Vita and 3DS here and probably some other systems but that is a rare occurrence. I find many visual novel games interesting, to be fair I don’t get into otome too much but I find it hard to project myself onto a female character for obvious reasons.
Hatoful Boyfriend, in a sense, transcends these bounds though, if only because it inserted what can only be explained as semi-bestiality. You are a human girl in a world dominated by birds, like some crazy avian version of planet of the apes. You are a hunter gatherer because apparently humans lost the bird war and have been placed into a high school… for birds. The birds talk and think like people but still look like birds… While adjusting to bird life you fall in love with one of a variety of birds… I just want that to sink in for a second, the physical mechanics alone of such a union boggles the mind. I was told it also has some political issue where some birds want to kill all humans and others want to save them, so it works about as well as actual US politics. There is also some weird human serial killer who kills people and leaves the parts everywhere and so on. Welp… I’m hooked.
The game comes out on PS4 and Vita July 21; it is a download only game though. No special edition for those of us state side. So if you’re a bird lover, a furry or just love weird shit from Japan come get in on this game. While it has an odd premise that story is interesting the dialogue is witty, a great already spoof on modern dating sims. Frankly, I have been having a lot more luck recently with smaller indie style games than big developer games. So I’m going to spread my wings, fly a little and get some of that sweet bird lovin’. I just scared myself a little…
