The indie market has been a growing competition to get backers and money the last few years thanks to sites like Kickstarter and Steam’s Greenlight. At the same time however people with actual money have been taking an interest in games as well. Some big name stars are even getting into the gaming business like Kim Kardashian, Katy Perry and even Taylor Swift has an upcoming app game. While this could be a good sign that video games are finally becoming more socially excepted and not just something that turns kids violent and crazy I have to wonder; who is playing these shit games? To be fair I have played some terrible games in my day, sometimes on purpose just to see how bad they were. If I was ever caught playing anything by a Kardashian though I would have to turn in my gamer card right there. I would also ask why developers would create games like this but then I remember how far a lot of money can get you.
Well now Kanye West is getting into the game market as well and is creating his own game called Only One: The Game; named after one of his songs from 2014. Kanye dropped this bomb during the announcement of his new album and clothing line Thursday. Designed to be a tribute to his mother who died from complications during cosmetic surgery in 2007, the player is supposed to help her ‘reach the highest gates of heaven by going through the light’. So an odd but touching sentiment but with Kanye’s ego I’m sure there is more to it than we are being told right now. He also showed a brief trailer that didn’t exactly wow anyone, which Kanye didn’t like apparently.
After he showed off the footage, he didn’t seem happy with how people received the trailer of a game meant to commemorate his late mother, Donda West.
“That’s not easy to do, man!” Kanye said, presumably about making the game in the first place. “Y’all just be acting like that shit is regular.”
That’s when Kanye played the trailer for the audience again. But not without giving us a small tale about the game’s development.
Not only did Kanye play the trailer again but he also felt the need to explain how hard it was and how he was disrespected making the game. Because throwing tons of money around is hard now apparently.
“No, you don’t understand. I go out and meet with everybody in San Fran, and they’ll diss the fuck out of me. And I’ll be like, ‘I wanna make a game,’ and they’ll be like, ‘FUCK YOU.’ That was hard to do, bro!”
Not only am I sure he didn’t go around doing anything himself, I’m sure the first developer he tossed a stack of cash at practically jumped at the chance. Awful game or not it is hard to argue semantics when you’re getting paid. The short trailer offered little to no information, only showing a cloud covered heaven and a bizarre Pegasus… kind of a mixed message unless I missed the part of the bible on Hercules and Pegasus. Other than that there is no information, no date, no developer, not even any clue what in the hell kind of game Only One is. Once again I find myself asking, who is this game being made for? Because sentimental or not it seems to exist for the soul purpose of feeding Kanye’s massive ego.
