Pikmin has always been one of those titles I imagined working as a 2D plat-former, and while I for some reason always imagined Pikmin 3 to be a 3DS title (before it was announced), it’s great to see that we’re finally receiving a handheld Pikmin game, nonetheless. Pikmin on the Nintendo 3DS was originally revealed during 2016 during Direct Presentation which took place during the later months of the year. During that time, the title did not have an official name but during the recent Nintendo Direct Presentation which took place this week; we now know the official name of the title is “Hey! Pikmin”.

“The first Pikmin game for Nintendo 3DS finds Captain Olimar embarking on an adventure through lush worlds with his trusted Pikmin by his side. In a new type of Pikmin game, players are tasked with throwing all types of different Pikmin using the touch screen to solve puzzles, overcome challenges and defeat enemies through side-scrolling levels.”

The footage shown during the Direct Presentation was not all that different from what we saw when the title was first revealed back in 2016; however, we learned a bit more about the backstory of the game, as well as how you’ll be interacting with the Pikmin on screen. The title is almost like a Pikmin spin on the Mario vs Donkey Kong titles in a way.

Hey! Pikmin officially launches on the Nintendo 3DS on July 28th and will also launch alongside a new amiibo figure based on the Pikmin series. Though details were not revealed as to how exactly the Pikmin will work in-game, it’s quite likely it will unlock some new abilities or perhaps content that isn’t obtainable otherwise.
