It’s been quite a long development process for the folks over at, Deep Silver, but at the same time I’m sure, an interesting one. Shenmue III was originally announced back at E3 2015, where Sony kicked off the crowd-funding campaign for the game; the title was very quickly funded, becoming one of the fastest funded projects on Kickstarter of all time, while also temporarily crashing the Kickstarter website. Since it’s campaign period has come to a close, the game however has seen a few delays, with it’s original release window being set for 2017, then Summer 2018; however earlier this year it was revealed that developers would be spending a bit more time working on the game to deliver the best product as possible.
Now, announced at Gamescom 2018, the folks at Deep Silver have revealed that Shenmue III is officially slated for an official release during August 2019, and they even dropped a brand new trailer to go along with the reveal.
While the wait for Shenmue III will surely be a long one as we still have another full year ahead of us, if you perhaps need a refresher on the story of Shenmue, I would definitely recommend picking up the recently released Shenmue I & II collections, currently available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Steam. The story of Shenmue III definitely seems to be shaping up to be an interesting one, I’ll surely be going back to play the first two titles so I can be well-prepared when Shenmue III finally arrives!
Shenmue III will launch on August 27th, 2019 for PS4 and PC.
