For quite sometime now, Sony has been getting quite a bit of flack out their policies, one of which was there reluctance to support cross-play functionality with other platforms due to their belief and motto that “PlayStation is the best place to play”. While there are a few games on the PlayStation that already support cross-play to some degree, one of the most popular titles of all time, had not – that title is of course the infamous ‘Fortnite’.

It seems that Sony has heard fans loud and clear as of now however, as it seems they are now in the process of changing their policy in regards to cross-play and are now in the process of opening up their “online borders”, if you will.  Over on the PlayStation Blog, and official statement was released by John Kodera, the current President and Global CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment had the following so say regarding the situation:

“Following a comprehensive evaluation process, SIE has identified a path toward supporting cross-platform features for select third party content. We recognize that PS4 players have been eagerly awaiting an update, and we appreciate the community’s continued patience as we have navigated through this issue to find a solution.”

“Eagerly awaiting” almost seems to be an understatement, as I feel majority of the PlayStation community may have given up all-together in regards to the possibility of a consistent cross-play function on the PS4, as Sony had seemingly made it very clear it wasn’t happening. Well, it turns out the community truly does have a big impact – a great remainder to always make your voice heard, gamers!

“This represents a major policy change for SIE, and we are now in the planning process across the organization to support this change. We will update the community once we have more details to share, including more specifics regarding the beta timeframe, and what this means for other titles going forward.”

While this isn’t a lot of information to go off of in regards to when we might officially see cross-play implemented within a handful more of titles on the PlayStation platform, it is nice to see that they are taking action. Things are definitely headed in the right direction! Better late than never.
