Senran Kagura: Estival Versus isn’t a great game, but it isn’t terrible either. While clearly not for everyone, especially the easily offended, it is fun to play if not taken seriously. Just as comedy can be used to combat racism, Senran Kagura can fight sexism by how ridiculous it is. No one should take Estival Versus literally, although of course some will (and they should be shunned). Estival Versus should be taken for what it is: a light-hearted look at the insanity Japan has created. It is difficult to even recommend this game, because it varies so much from person to person. As far as games go, it is well put together–but that isn’t the main draw is it? Similarly, you don’t watch the music video “Turn Down for What” for its cultural insight. The most notable element of Estival Versus is the use of special finisher moves. If enemies take enough damage near certain areas, they trigger a special finish scene (which, amazingly, are more awkward than normal finishers). I laughed particularly hard at one that involved characters getting their butts stuck in a billboard and another that involved an octopus… playing to your strengths, eh Japan? For anyone interested, I put together a complete video of ALL the sexy finishers with octopus, pole dancing and more.
